Friends of Diabetes International is a UK registered charity (no.1169887) with the primary aim of diabetes education, awareness and the saving of related lives in the UK and developing countries around the world. Our work so far has mainly focused on the UK with our Healthy Eating and Living Project in Southwark funded by Big Lottery and our work in Sierra Leone.
Our current project in the UK which is Healthy Eating and Living Options, precisely sits within the necessary actions that we need to take to tackle this crisis. We are thus proud to say that the Big Lottery’s Awards for All funded us this year and we are hoping that they will continue to support such vital project in the future.
Our work, as already mentioned is extended outside of the UK to our first international country - Sierra Leone, a country still trying to rise out of the ashes of the decade long civil war, Mudslide and the Ebola crisis. We are planning towards extending this work to other Sub-Sahara Counties in the near future. We currently support people in Sierra Leone with Diabetes testing/screening, raising diabetes awareness and providing insulin to pregnant mothers and Type 1 diabetes children.
Friends of Diabetes Sierra Leone (FoDSL) was established in 2013 by Salome Hydes (pictured above), who was born in Sierra Leone but has for many years lived and worked in the UK. She qualified with a Teacher's Certificate from Bo Teacher's College in Sierra Leone in 1986 and was confirmed a Registered Nurse (Mental Health) in the UK in 2005. Salome volunteers for Diabetes UK and is a Diabetes Community Champion for Southwark and Lambeth Councils. She shares her time between London and Sierra Leone.
